Mirror, Mirror

I’ve been thinking lately that people in my life are a mirror for me. What I see in them is what is within me.

Here are a few examples.

  • There’s a man I’ve dated on and off for a couple of years. His lack of commitment in relationships has always bothered me. Over the last few months, it’s finally dawned on me, I’m attracting him because he’s mirroring MY lack of commitment in relationships.
  • Someone I work with frustrates me with her aggressive style. She’s making me aware of my own aggression.
  • I also have a friend who is nurturing and loving. She brings out my loving side.

Everyone in my life is a gift for awareness, if I choose to accept it. Instead of focusing on what the other person is doing to me, I am making an effort to shift my focus on what I can learn about myself.

My teachers are all around me…if I allow myself to listen.

Well stated Nancy. I’ve had some of the same realizations…that the things that bother me about other people are likely to be things that bother me about myself. Likewise, the things that I love and admire in others are things that I love and praise myself for. Funny how that all works.

Very well said, Nancy. While it’s true that people around you can have an effect on you, your true mirrors are your friends. The people you choose to associate with are much more likely to be a truer reflection of yourself.

So that man who is afraid to commit, yes, that is a reflection. That lady at work, however, while making you more aware of yourself, is much less a mirror, since you do not choose to associate with her – you must for work. That doesn’t mean, of course, that she has anything less to teach you.

We all have so much to learn. It is wonderful to read about someone who has the fortitude to face those lessons squarely and recognise and accept them for what they are.

    Kindest wishes,
    S.M. Carrière
