The Secret? ACT to ATTRACT!
I’m a writer working on a book. Last night, I was meeting with my writing group, and our conversation digressed from writing to life, as we sipped our second glass of wine.
“I’d like to go to India for three weeks,” I said. “I’d like to do some kind of volunteer work and get to know the country and people.”
Both of my writer friends agreed; they’d like to visit a developing country as well. Do some volunteer work.
“So what’s stopping you?”
Martin looked at me from across the table and paused for a minute as my question sank in.
“That’s a good question.”
It’s interesting to me that so many people will say that they want this or that in their lives, and then they don’t DO anything about it. (I’ve been one of them, but not any more.)
Maybe your dream is not to travel to India. Maybe it’s starting a new business, going to college, or meeting a wonderful partner. If the dream is a fuzzy thought in your mind, that’s where it will stay. Maybe at times, someone will mention an idea that triggers the thought, but soon as it comes up, the idea will be squalshed.
Here’s the truth: manifesting a dream takes action. I know that the concepts presented in the movie “The Secret” are popular right now. And I am truly in favor of becoming clear and visualizing what we want to attract in our lives. There’s a lot to learn from this approach. But it’s not the complete approach.
You must ACT to ATTRACT.
If you look at the words “ACT” and “ATTRACT,” you’ll notice that ACT is at the end of ATTRACT.
“The Secret” instructs us to:
- Be clear about the goal.
- Visualize achieving it.
- Receive it.
I would suggest adding a 2 1/2 to the formula: ACT. Sometimes we don’t know the perfect actions, and that’s OK. Do what you can toward working toward your goal.
I think of the ACT part as planting seeds. We don’t always know which seeds will sprout, so we just need to keep planting.
Plant some seeds today on behalf of your dream.

ACT to ATTRACT. Brilliant!
Two years ago, an overweight woman on my regular bus route sat next to me on purpose. We talked and kidded around. She wrote down her first name and her phone number on a scrap of paper. We are still together, sometimes as lovers.
I recently heard a quote that I really liked:
A vision without action is a daydream; and action without vision is a nightmare.
